before terre was house

of an acoustic nature

I met Terre Thaemlitz on May 18, 1996 when we both performed at the same Cloudwatch event in Baltimore.  That night I was handing out a promo mixtape that I had finished a few days before, “Absolute Zer0″. (which, coincidentally, included his track “Hovering Glows” mixed over “E.P.L. (Femme Machine)” his ode to Kraftwerk) I gave him a copy, and a few weeks later he returned the favor with a couple Comatonse promos and the recording shown above which he had cheekily packaged in the Bon Jovi tape case shown. Now here we are nearly thirteen years later and Terre, back then a guru of the ambient and downtempo scene, has become a bit of a deep house hero.  All the blogs are ga-ga over his album “Midtown 120 Blues” which he released under his “DJ Sprinkles” alias.  Fair enough, it is a great album, but I thought I’d share Terre as I knew and loved him, the more ambient, experimental side of Terre Thaemlitz.  I hope you enjoy this dj set “Of An Acoustic Nature - live in Calgary 06-01-1996″.  Be forewarned, it is decidedly not dance music, but it is totally awesome.

Download side A here and side B over here.

If you like this dj set you should definitely check out his other ambient releases from the mid 90s, which were all pretty mind blowing.

Oh, and to new readers, welcome, take a look around, especially at the main site where you can find all my dj mixes, and please do subscribe!

the count is a pimp

from this article on the origins of some of the classic Muppet characters:

“4. Count von Count made his first appearance in 1972 [just three years before I was born! -cz] and was made out of an Anything Muppet pattern — a blank Muppet head that could have features added to it to make various characters. He used to be more sinister — he was able to hypnotize and stun people and he laughed in typical scary-villain-type fashion after completing a count of something and thunder and lightning would occur.

He was quickly made more appealing to little kids, though. He is apparently quite the ladies’ man — he has been linked to Countess von Backward, who loves to count backward; Countess Dahling von Dahling and Lady Two.” [emphasis added]

RAVE! (coughcoughguiltypleasurecoughcough)

epic fail, beatport

It’s the year 2009. There is absolutely no excuse to go offline for site maintenance. Especially not for several hours in the evening (eastern time) at the beginning of the month. Get it together. YOU ARE LOSING MONEY.

I was going to post a January chart here, but I can’t because I can’t get to my Beatport crate, where my top 15 is waiting to be purchased.

Maybe I should go back to buying only vinyl.

odds and ends superlatives (from the neverending 2008 year end wrapup)

My choice for BREAKOUT ARTIST of the year: Wareika, also one of the most underrated artists of the year!

MOST OVERRATED underground tracks of the year: psychotic photosynthesis/the further you look… If these cuts had been made by anybody but Omar S they would have been immediately written off as fair to middling, but his cult following is strong (though certainly not undeservedly so!) this is just not nearly the best of his work.

Most talked about track that actually really, really, REALLY sucked - Radio Slave - Grindhouse (Dubfire terror planet remix)

House album of the year: Ian Pooley - In Other Words
Techno album of the year: Andy Stott - Unknown Exception

Dubstep: Still sucks!  (though some stuff that many would call dubstep has been growing on me, like scuba’s stuff, for example)

DJ Mix of the Year: Three way tie - either Adam Marshall’s LWE podcast or Jackmate’s MNML SSGS mix or James Gyre’s “Mixing Dirty”.
