Head to Head Album Reviews: Rick Wade vs. Ian Pooley

rick wade vs. ian pooley

I really love Detroit Beatdown house stalwart Rick Wade.  He’s been doing what he does forever, he stays away from acting like a superstar despite his well deserved underground reputation as a deep house don, (to wit: his myspace profile features slice of life photos of him at his day job and snaps of him about to take a shower) and he usually turns out quite deep and soulful dance tracks.  That’s why it’s especially disappointing that his recent artist album The Good, the Bad, and the Deep is exactly all three, usually simultaneously, and not much good.  That’s especially true if by “good, bad, and deep” you mean “totally unremarkable.” His latest release for Yore, and his career second full length album, GBD is not so much an album as an assemblage of mediocre deep house tracks with a few overused themes.

a quick list

The good news is I started a new day job recently.   The bad news is that means I’ve been pretty busy getting into the swing of things there, so unfortunately I haven’t gotten around to finishing a few posts I’ve been working on.  In the mean time, here’s a list of my top 30 all-time favorite disco tracks:

B&B Band - All Night Long (which I played on this mix)
T-Connection- At Midnight
Geraldine Hunt - Can’t Fake The Feeling
Gino Soccio - Dancer
Tavares - Don’t Take Away The Music
First Choice - Dr. Love
Wings - Goodnight Tonight
Patrice Rushen - Haven’t You Heard
Tantra - Hills Of Katmandu
Rufus & Chaka Khan - I Know You, I Live You
Chic - I Want Your Love
Carl Bean - I Was Born This Way
Diana Ross - I’m Coming Out
Baby’o - In The Forest
Salsoul Orchestra - It’s Good For The Soul
Grace Jones - La Vie En Rose
Temptations - Law Of The Land
First Choice - Let No Man Put Asunder
Michael Zager Band - Let’s All Chant
MFSB - Love Is The Message
ESG - Moody
Bee Gees - More Than A Woman
Andrea True Connection - More, More, More
Double Exposure - My Love Is Free
Michael Jackson - Off The Wall
Chicago - Street Player
Eddie Holman - This Will Be A Night To Remember
Cheryl Lynn - To Be Real
Loleatta Holloway - We’re Getting Stronger (The Longer We Stay Together)
Class Action - Weekend

I know there are a ton I’m forgetting, so expect a second installment at some point.
